Specialized Courses for the Neurodivergent Population
We are thrilled to offer specialized courses for the neurodivergent population.
These thoughtfully crafted programs aim to empower, support, and foster growth.
Understanding the Term
The term "neurodivergent," as defined by the Oxford Language Dictionary, refers to differing mental or neurological functions from what is considered typical. This term is often used in reference to autism spectrum disorders and contrasts with "neurotypical." Neurodivergent individuals may need models or extra support to navigate situations that neurotypical individuals might intuitively understand.
First coined in 1990 by autistic sociologist Judy Singer, "neurodivergent" or “neurodiverse” was introduced as a positive alternative to deficit-based terms like “disorder.” At PURE JOY Holistic Health & Wellness, we recognize that everyone has unique strengths to offer. We honor the different ways people think, behave, and learn.
We believe that no learning or attention ability should stand in the way. Our mission is to offer classes and therapies in a holistic environment that supports diverse learning styles. In our classes for neurodivergent students, we adapt to meet each learner's needs. We are all part of 'humankind' and deserve to be treated with kindness and respect.
What We Offer
- PEERS Classes: Lori is an internationally certified instructor for the evidence-based PEERS program through UCLA. We offer social skills classes for all age groups, covering important topics such as making and keeping friends, handling bullying, and more. These classes are available both in-person and via Zoom, providing flexible learning options throughout the year. Our first Social Skills for Adolescents and Adults course begins on April 16. This 14-week program involves both the student and their parent or caregiver, focusing on practical techniques for building and maintaining healthy friendships. Parents will also be trained as social coaches to support their children. Class size is limited to 10 students, ensuring personalized attention. Some insurance providers may cover the course, or it may qualify for DDD funding.
- Rhythm, Rhyme, & Meditation Time: Join us for a sensory journey with a variety of musical and vibrational instruments, including chimes, drums, Tibetan bowls, rain sticks, shakers, and more. Each class concludes with calming exercises and meditation techniques tailored to the age group. Age groupings include parent/child (2 1/2-5 years), 6-12 years, and teens.
- Meditation/Sound Healing Circle: Help your child learn to calm their body and mind with guided breathing, soothing music, and sound. Crystal bowls and other sound healing instruments will be used to create a peaceful atmosphere. This class is recommended for ages 14 and up.
New classes are added regularly. Contact us by phone or email for the latest schedule.
